A Garage Door FAQ

Why does a garage door fail?
The leading causes of garage door failure are lack of maintenance and being hit by vehicles.

What maintenance should a homeowner perform of a garage door?
Clean the frame’s weather stripping with vinyl cleaner and lubricate it at least quarterly. Inspect the rollers every six months and replace any that are worn or broken. Or call Lone Star Overhead Doors to have this done. Follow the same paint schedule on the exterior of the door as the home.

Is an insulated garage door needed?
This depends on the homeowner’s budget and the climate. A garage door opening represents a large opening in your home’s thermal barrier. With tax credit incentives to promote a healthier and more energy-efficient environment, an insulated garage door will help to reduce the amount of outside temperature that enters your garage, thus reducing the amount of energy required to cool or heat your home.

How durable is a garage door?
A garage door’s “cycle” is one full opening and closing action. Garage door torsion springs are rated by cycle life, with 10,000 cycles as the industry standard minimum. Upgrades are available to about 100,000 cycles. Normally, a spring breaks about every 7 to 12 years with average usage. If a garage door has two or more springs and one breaks, all springs should be replaced to maintain proper balance.

What are important garage door safety tips?
The door is not a toy. Monitor children’s behavior. Although newer doors have improved safety features, do race the door. This is dangerous and can result in serious injury or death. Know how to use the emergency release. Always use door handles – beware of getting ‘pinched’. Always place and store remote controls out of the reach of children. The wall control should be out of the reach of children (at least 5 feet from the floor) and away from all moving parts. Mount and use the wall control switch where there is good visibility of the garage door itself.
